Valve isn’t rushing to launch a true next-gen Steam Deck, but they have something exciting up their sleeve: a limited-edition Steam Deck OLED in a sleek white finish.
They’re calling it the “Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White.” While it shares the same specs as the current 1TB model, it’ll set you back an extra $30, priced at $679. Mark your calendars, as it hits the shelves next Monday, November 18.
This special edition comes with its own flair. Besides the white and gray color scheme, it includes a matching white carrying case and a microfiber cleaning cloth. Valve previously dabbled with color when they released a limited edition with a smoky translucent shell. It was a hit, selling out rapidly despite minor cosmetic flaws. This time, Valve is going global, offering the fresh white model wherever Steam Deck is currently available, like in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, and through Komodo in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea. Each region will receive its fair share of stock.
To tackle scalpers, Valve is capping orders at one per account. Additionally, your Steam account needs at least one purchase before November 2024 to qualify for this deal.
Valve shared with the press that they’re using this latest limited edition as a testing ground for future color options: “We’re keen to see how the community responds, and this will guide our decisions for new color variants moving forward.”
If you’re a fan of the new look but prefer exploring other options, don’t worry. Companies like Jsaux and dbrand offer custom backplates and skins. However, if you’re all about that official Valve touch, you’d better hurry before this limited stock runs dry.
Looking ahead, Valve teased more exciting developments for the Deck, promising continued color options, regular software updates, and hints at what lies ahead for Steam Deck and other hardware innovations.
From the snapshots, the new design gives off vibes of a flashy Wii U, crossed with a classic iPod—a promising mix. It’ll be interesting to see if current owners will find this swanky new color tempting enough to upgrade.
