There’s growing excitement around the idea that Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie—known as the Generation 6 starters—might take center stage in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. This upcoming game was initially teased with a short CG trailer last year, which gave eager fans a glimpse of what to expect while keeping many details under wraps.
The trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A confirmed its setting in the vibrant Lumiose City of the Kalos region. It promised the return of several familiar Pokemon and delighted fans with the news that Mega Evolutions will be back. However, details about the game, especially which starter Pokemon will be available, have remained elusive.
While the Pokemon Company hasn’t officially announced the starters for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, clues are piling up that Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie could be the ones. For those not in the loop, these three were originally introduced as starters in Pokemon X and Y, which also takes place in Kalos. Hints from reliable sources suggest their return, and artwork from the recent 2025 Pokemon World Championships featuring Chespin and Fennekin appears to reinforce this theory.
Naturally, with the game set in Kalos, many would expect these starters to make a comeback, but this would deviate from the pattern set by Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Although set in an ancient Sinnoh, Legends: Arceus chose not to use Sinnoh’s original starters, opting for a mix from various generations instead. Fans speculated that Z-A might adopt a similar approach, but that possibility is becoming less likely.
If Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie indeed take the starring roles, they might come with a twist. Speculations abound about potential changes to their final evolutions or the introduction of new Mega Evolutions. While enthusiasts can only guess for now, they won’t have to wait much longer for clarity.
Excitingly, a Pokemon Presents event is scheduled for Thursday, February 27, marking Pokemon Day. Although not confirmed, there’s a strong belief that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will be featured, possibly revealing the starter lineup. Fans should mark their calendars for the event, set to air at 9 a.m. ET, to finally get some definitive answers.
