It seems we’re in for a delightful twist in the world of The Witcher 3 mods—a chance to blend a dash of Skyrim’s dragon-taming charm into our monster-slaying adventures. Remember how someone once cleverly paired Kazuma Kiryu’s back tat with big Gerry? Well, this new mod might just top that by letting you experience a dragon ride reminiscent of being the Dragonborn on Solstheim.
Last year, we explored some impressive Witcher 3 mods that added fresh quests, a sprawling ship to explore, and even the chance to play as Ciri with her look from The Witcher 4. These creative modifications were all thanks to the incredibly useful REDkit tools, which continue to inspire modders to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Enter “Herald of the White Frost,” the brainchild of modder errornoaccess. This talented creator previously gifted us with the whimsical centaur horse-man Geralt, a mod that provided hours of entertainment. They’ve also crafted mounts featuring griffins, fiends, and even White Orchard’s alchemist, Tomira, who adds her own unique twist to the mix.
Their latest work invites players to confront a “custom dracolizard monster” in a thrilling boss battle. Once you emerge victorious, you get to soar through the skies on its back, echoing the dragon-riding experience from Skyrim—a feature many of us have dabbled with before but perhaps haven’t revisited often.
You’ll encounter the dragon, aptly named Unhcegila, the Herald of the White Frost, during the portal-jumping quest “Through Time and Space” within the icy confines of White Orchard. Alternatively, you can summon it with a “Mysterious Sapphire Crystal” available for purchase from four select merchants, all detailed in the mod’s description.
Prepare yourself for a challenging showdown, as the existing feedback on the mod suggests it’s no easy feat. Once you claim victory, you’ll earn the “Horn of the Frozen Flame.” With it, you’ll be able to summon the dragon for a ride, presumably by equipping the horn just like you would a torch. If it’s akin to the centaur mod, you’ll first receive a quick tutorial to master those dragon-riding controls.
