The latest season of MultiVersus is set to be the grand finale for this popular crossover fighting game. In a recent announcement from Warner Bros. Games, it was revealed that development on MultiVersus is coming to an end, and the game will officially go offline on May 30, coinciding with the conclusion of its upcoming Season 5.
Fans of MultiVersus will still have the chance to enjoy the game offline, as confirmed by the publisher. Players can continue to battle it out locally or against AI opponents. However, as of May 30 at 9 a.m. PDT, the game won’t be available for download any longer. Warner Bros. Games has also ceased support for real-money transactions, meaning the premium currency, Gleamium, is no longer up for grabs.
In its swan song, Season 5 is set to introduce two exciting characters into the mix: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from the Looney Tunes universe. According to WB Games, all content from Season 5, including these new characters, can be unlocked through gameplay. The final season is scheduled to kick off on February 4.
Expressing their gratitude, WB Games shared a heartfelt message: “We want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. The teams at Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games have poured their heart and soul into this game. We will always be thankful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”
MultiVersus first hit the scene in July 2022 as part of what was described as an open beta by Warner Bros. and Player First Games. Nearly a year later, the game was taken offline to enhance its netcode, matchmaking, and progression system, alongside developing new characters, maps, and modes to keep gameplay fresh. When the game made its return in May 2024, it came with a slew of updates and fresh faces. However, not all these changes resonated with the players, and after two initially strong launches, interest in the game seems to have dwindled, as observed from Steam Charts and Twitch viewership data.
By the end of Season 5, MultiVersus will showcase a diverse roster of 35 characters pulled from film, television, and comic book lore. This Smash Bros.-esque fighting game features a lineup that includes Batman, Superman, Rick and Morty, Shaggy and Velma from Scooby Doo, and Tom and Jerry. Since its relaunch in 2024, the game has welcomed new faces like Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Agent Smith from The Matrix, the Powerpuff Girls, Beetlejuice, and more.
Even as development wraps up, MultiVersus remains free to play and can be downloaded on platforms like PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
