While taking down massive, terrifying creatures is at the heart of Monster Hunter Wilds, its arachnophobia mode misses the mark significantly. This mode is intended to ease the experience for those with a fear of spiders by transforming tiny, spider-like foes into harmless slimes. Unfortunately, it leaves the enormous spiders—those challenging beasts you battle for several minutes—totally unchanged. One of these gigantic foes makes an appearance just a few hours into the game.
Thankfully, PC players have a resourceful ally in NexusMods user, TeaSharkLad, who took matters into their own hands before even diving into the game themselves. Keen to provide a real solution, they announced on X that their priority was to modify the daunting monsters, Nerscylla and Lala Barina, into oversized slimes.
In just a few hours, they rolled out a mod called Temnophobia Mode, offering a workaround for anyone seeking a less creepy gaming experience. This clever tweak transforms the spider bosses into large blobs, though TeaSharkLad admits it poses a new challenge—spotting the creatures’ attacks becomes tricky. However, they attempted to incorporate some visual cues to assist players. “It’s not perfect, and I’m no expert,” they admitted in the mod’s description, “but it was necessary.”
Installing the mod is straightforward. You’ll need Fluffy Mod Manager and REFramework. If you can unzip files and locate your Monster Hunter Wilds folder, you’re all set. Once that’s done, adding the Temnophobia mod is simply a matter of dragging and dropping.
Initially, TeaSharkLad thought of the mod as a playful idea, but it quickly became a lifeline for those let down by the original arachnophobia mode. Their efforts are bound to be appreciated by many, and perhaps it will nudge Capcom in the right direction for its next installment.
