Marvel Rivals Season 2 is bringing something fresh to the table with an experimental feature called Switch Shader Compilation Mode. It’s aimed at smoothing out frame rate issues for players on PCs with 16GB of RAM or less, by front-loading shader compilations when the game or GPU updates.
Ahead of the launch, NetEase Games announced this new PC option could be a boon for players struggling with frame rate issues. Introduced as part of Season 2, called Hellfire Gala, players can look forward not just to this technical improvement, but also the debut of Emma Frost as a new Vanguard, complete with her X-Revolution costume available for purchase. Emma’s icy telekinetic powers are designed to protect her teammates, adding a new twist to gameplay. Alongside her, a thrilling new Krakoa map will be unveiled, setting the scene for the intriguing Hellfire Gala hosted by Emma herself. Marvel Rivals Season 2 is set to kick off on Friday, April 11, at 4:00 AM Eastern.
This Switch Shader Compilation Mode, initially mentioned in the patch notes, offers a solution to smooth gaming performance on certain PCs. According to a blog post by Marvel Rivals, this feature, once enabled, compiles shaders only the first time the game is launched after any GPU driver or game version updates.
The primary aim of this feature is to assist players who have 16GB of RAM or less, by balancing frame rate and memory usage. High memory usage might cause systems with limited RAM to swap more resources, potentially leading to frame rate drops, game freezes, or even crashes. Preloading shader compilations can alleviate these issues on budget systems.
However, users should be aware of a few potential hiccups with the new mode. Some game objects and textures might render inconsistently for a few frames during a match, which could occasionally cause stutters during object loading. Players using a 6-core CPU in combination with AMD’s FSR3 Frame Generation may experience extra stutters as well.
Despite these considerations, NetEase is encouraging players with less RAM to try out this new mode. As players explore the Krakoa map and take in the new season’s spectacles, the effectiveness of this experimental feature will be under scrutiny.
