Today brought some tough news from Eidos Montreal, the creative minds behind fan favorites like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. They’ve announced plans to lay off a portion of their workforce.

Eidos Montreal has revealed that they will be letting go of 75 employees. While we don’t have all the details yet on precisely who will be affected, the studio explained that these layoffs are happening because they can’t switch these roles to other projects they’re working on. They emphasize that this isn’t because of any lack of skill or effort from those impacted. Instead, it’s simply a matter of not having enough capacity for these roles. To ease the transition, Eidos Montreal is committed to helping the affected employees find new opportunities in the industry.
Their official statement reads, “Today, we informed our studio staff that we are going to let go of up to 75 valuable members, as one of our mandates is coming to an end. It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services.” They further added, “These very talented, highly experienced experts are going to enter the employment market, and we are working to support them through this transition. Eidos-Montréal stays committed to deliver its other projects currently in development.”
This isn’t the first time the studio has had to make such difficult choices. Just over a year ago, in January, they let go of 97 employees citing the “global economic context” as the reason. Around the same time, their parent company, Embracer Group, pulled the plug on a new game set in the Deus Ex universe.
Eidos Montreal has built a strong reputation with its work on the iconic Deus Ex and Tomb Raider series. They’ve also brought us titles like 2014’s Thief and 2021’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. More recently, in June, they announced their involvement as a support studio for PlayGround Games on the upcoming Xbox title, Fable.
