Dynasty Warriors: Origins is an incredible game that genuinely blew me away during my review. If it were up to me, I’d have written even more glowing remarks about it, but let’s just say it quickly climbed to the top of my favorite games in the series. This hack-and-slash RPG, set during the rich historical period of China’s Three Kingdoms, casts you as a mysterious soldier on a quest to shape the nation’s destiny. But hey, don’t just take my word for it.
This past weekend, Origins almost hit the 70,000 mark for concurrent players, peaking at a remarkable 69,483. To put this achievement into perspective, the last four games in this series only managed to see around 3,900 players online simultaneously. That’s a more than 17-fold increase in player numbers for this newest installment.
In addition to its success within the Dynasty Warriors franchise, Origins has pulled off the impressive feat of being the second-largest launch ever for any Koei Tecmo game. Alejandro from Game Discover Co. laid out these differences beautifully in a detailed graph he shared.
Now, let’s dive into a comparison: Dynasty Warriors: Origins vs. Wo Long. While Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty might still hold the title for the company’s biggest launch, there’s no doubt they’re thrilled with how Origins turned out. Wo Long currently has a mixed rating on Steam at just 47% approval. Compare that to Origins’ robust 94%, and you’ll likely find it translates into steadier sales.
Although Dynasty Warriors attracted 6,000 fewer players than Wo Long, it’s hard to believe Wo Long had a more stable financial outcome on Steam, especially given the platform’s refund policy. No shade on Wo Long—it has its impressive 3.8 million players in under two months. I’m simply highlighting how remarkable Origins’ success is, especially in what was considered a niche series.
Now, let’s see what fans of the series are saying about Dynasty Warriors: Origins:
Lothair Mantelar shares, “It’s been a long while since a Dynasty Warriors game truly captivated me. This feels like such a fresh take while retaining what made past games enjoyable. Can’t wait to see what they do next.”
Ackman adds, “Somehow they’ve blended the intensity of officer battles reminiscent of Ghost of Tsushima with the thrill of crowd combat native to Warriors games. Hands down the best Warriors game in years.”
Lastly, Enhasa remarks, “They could’ve just churned out another typical game, and I would’ve been happy, but instead, they delivered excellence. My love for this game has everything to do with its gameplay and voice acting. Though I do miss the days of Cow Cow—RIP.”
If I haven’t already conveyed my enthusiasm enough, let me say a bit more. Dynasty Warriors: Origins injects new life into the series. Whether you’re drawn to the intricate storytelling or the jaw-dropping technical ability to handle massive battles, this game delivers a thrilling experience. If you’ve ever enjoyed a Warriors-style game, make sure to check out what I’m calling my top game of 2025.
