Exciting updates have made their way online for Dune Awakening, thanks to Funcom shedding some light on the game’s plans post-launch. Additionally, the game’s official Steam page now features detailed PC specifications, which is a treat for all you tech enthusiasts.
A short video presentation, narrated by Funcom’s chief creative officer Joel Byros, outlines the roadmap for the game’s life beyond its release date on May 20. Funcom has announced that, unlike many other MMOs, Dune Awakening will not require a subscription. Instead, they’ll be rolling out optional paid DLC packs, complemented by free updates.
These free updates promise to enhance the game with quality-of-life improvements, new features, and riveting story content—all the essentials that keep a live service game thriving. While details about the optional DLCs are scant at the moment, players will have the choice to purchase these either individually or bundled together in a season pass, which offers a variety of content in a single deal.
In an engaging twist, Byros shared that some players can secure early access if they purchase certain versions of the game. This means they can dive into the Dune universe as soon as May 15, a clever tactic that he explains helps "balance the server load" to ensure a smooth launch. Few things are as detrimental to an MMO as server issues right out of the gate.
Alongside the video, a detailed update appeared on Steam, revealing the minimum and recommended PC specifications:

The post also reveals some exciting PC features available for Dune Awakening, like NVIDIA’s DLSS 4, placing the game among the pioneers using this tech. If you’re planning to experience the game on PC, these features will certainly enhance your gaming experience.
So, what are your thoughts on this business model? Personally, I find it refreshing. With so many subscription services these days, it’s nice to have a game I can purchase without feeling tethered. It’s one reason why I frequently revisit Guild Wars 2. Plus, more news is on the horizon with a gameplay stream scheduled for March 24, as teased at the end of the Steam post.
Are you planning to explore the dunes on May 20, or perhaps, even five days ahead of schedule? Share your thoughts!
