This past week has been buzzing with authentic-looking leaks of the Nintendo Switch 2’s final design. The suspense reached a peak when Dbrand unexpectedly revealed a comprehensive 3D render of the new console, complete with a revamped version of their Killswitch carrying case, originally designed for handheld PCs and now adapted for the Switch 2. In a conversation with The Verge, Dbrand’s CEO, Adam Ijaz, explained that they crafted the render using precise dimensions from a 3D scan of actual hardware. The Switch 2 is said to measure around 270mm wide with Joy-Cons attached (and 200mm without them), 116mm tall, and 14mm thick.
The Nintendo Switch 2 seems to feature a significantly larger 8-inch screen compared to the Switch OLED’s 7.2-inch and the original Switch’s 6.2-inch displays. It introduces an extra button, possibly for capture, on the right Joy-Con, has magnetically-detachable controllers with a distinctive curve, offers USB-C ports on both the top and bottom, and boasts a wide, U-shaped kickstand similar to the improved one on the Switch OLED.
From what we gather, and given that its expected release is early in 2025, the Switch 2 is set to be a significant evolution from the OLED model. However, it might not utilize an OLED screen; the leaks suggest an 8-inch, 1080p IPS LCD instead, hopefully of a higher caliber than previous LCDs.
Turning to Dbrand’s Killswitch case design for the Switch 2, it seems they’ve had to rethink the typical full-body enclosures or upgraded kickstands found in their Steam Deck cases. To accommodate the Switch 2’s detachable Joy-Cons, the case comes apart into several pieces, secured together by a striking teal bungee cord. Known for their craftsmanship in phone and handheld cases, Dbrand’s final design is likely to impress.
Despite the excitement, we know there are many among you keen for a more straightforward glimpse at the Nintendo Switch 2 itself. While that’s still under wraps, the specifications Dbrand shared align with a 3D-printed mock-up sent to the YouTube channel SwitchUp earlier this week, giving some clue about the device’s potential look and feel.
Ultimately, Dbrand’s huge disclosure, presumably unbound by any non-disclosure agreements, suggests that an official announcement and release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 could be imminent. We’ve heard it might roll out before 2024 ends, while Nintendo has promised full details by March 2025. As that deadline approaches, companies like Dbrand are already gearing up production and building anticipation for Nintendo’s next major handheld hybrid console.
