I’ve always had a bit of nostalgia for games like Breakout and Arkanoid. There’s something incredibly satisfying about using a paddle-shaped spaceship to shatter bricks, especially when you’re watching as a barrage of multiball attacks sends those bricks flying. So, when Atari came out with the news—or rather, reintroduced the idea—of a fresh Breakout game where I could unleash some of that pent-up energy on structures floating in the cosmic void, I couldn’t help but get excited. It’s like they read my mind.
Atari’s latest project, Breakout Beyond, is set to launch this March. The game, a resurrection of the beloved franchise, aims to push players to not only demolish every brick but also to come up with clever strategies for building scores through combos, according to the press release. Unlike its predecessors, Beyond flips the classic gameplay on its axis, adopting a horizontal perspective that invites fans of arcade action to crash through walls from left to right. With 72 levels lined up and a two-player co-op mode in the mix, Atari is offering something for both solo players and those who enjoy teaming up.
Ethan Stearns, the senior director of games publishing at Atari, expressed his enthusiasm in a statement. “It’s a pleasure to bring this classic back to our audience,” Stearns said. “Our team found it ingenious to keep Breakout’s core experience intact while introducing an entirely fresh take on the concept. We truly believe Breakout Beyond stands as a proud addition to the series, and we’re eager to see the wild combos players will pull off as they break those bricks.”
Fans can look forward to Breakout Beyond being available on several platforms: Atari VCS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
