Available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, Fortnite’s latest thrilling adventure challenges players to face off against the monstrous Godzilla and, hopefully, survive the encounter!
Fortnite and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship these days. I reminisce fondly about its early days—when each match was a chaotic mix of seasoned veterans and newbies, everyone embroiled in a whirlwind of unexpected twists, hilarious mishaps, and the sting of loss. That wild ride has been replaced by a less thrilling experience where bots wander the map, almost gifting their lives to you without much of a fight. The intriguing, mysterious narrative that once invited endless speculation has been swapped out for standard quests and talking characters laying out typical video-game lore. Popular characters from well-known franchises keep dropping into the shop, eroding Fortnite’s unique identity and transforming it into a gathering of corporate icons reminiscent of Ready Player One’s universe.
Yet, despite my criticisms, I can’t fully resist Fortnite’s allure. Its world continues to draw me in with its tactile landscape; running, leaping, sliding, and scaling the map is still a joy. When days are tough, I find myself logging in to complete a few daily quests, basking in the simplicity of earning XP and the temporary escape it provides. Plus, Fortnite still knows how to put on a show at a scale few can rival. Case in point: Godzilla. The gigantic titan occasionally shows up in matches, and the sheer spectacle of controlling him—or witnessing his scale and might—is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I stumbled upon a video showcasing gameplay as the mighty creature, and it was jaw-dropping. The thrill of running from such an enormous threat, as a mere human speck, is too tempting to resist. So, this weekend, I predict I’ll be spending an unusual amount of time in Fortnite, hoping to encounter this behemoth firsthand. And if you spot me as I’m scurrying around, trying to dodge Godzilla’s wrath, please spare me. I come in peace! — Carolyn Petit
