Ubisoft, the renowned French publisher, appears to be crafting a new battle royale game designed to compete directly with Apex Legends. According to Insider Gaming, this new venture, which goes by the codename “Scout,” bears a striking resemblance to Respawn and EA’s successful title. In fact, some say the concept art used for Scout was initially a thumbnail for the project, and the characters seem to bear a notable similarity to those in Apex Legends. This game has reportedly been in development for quite some time.
The betting seems to be that Ubisoft believes they can attract players from the Apex Legends community, especially as Electronic Arts has acknowledged a decline in the game’s financial performance.
A source noted, “The goal seems to be to take advantage of the decreasing player numbers in Apex, with Ubisoft’s leadership seeing an opportunity for another hero-based battle royale in the market.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first dive into the free-to-play battle royale scene. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, which unfortunately didn’t last long, shutting down just 18 months later. This development also occurs shortly after Ubisoft decided to discontinue another free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, at the end of 2024.
Interestingly, there is speculation about an Apex Legends 2.0 version, which is rumored to make its debut sometime after April 2026. So, it seems the battle for players in the battle royale genre is far from over.
