Marathon has unveiled its first four playable characters: Blackbird, Glitch, Locus, and Void. This lineup promises a diverse mix of skills and unique challenges. At launch, players can expect two additional characters, rounding out the game’s roster when it arrives on PC and consoles this September 23.
In a significant first look, Marathon showcased some gameplay and introduced us to the initial classes we can expect from Bungie’s next big release. The return of the beloved Marathon series was announced back in May 2023, marking a significant milestone. Not only is this installment venturing into the extraction shooter genre, but it’s also Bungie’s debut under Sony Interactive Entertainment, which acquired the company in a landmark $3.6 billion deal in July 2022.
As preparations continue for the game’s release, Bungie took to the stage this April 12, just a month shy of the franchise’s revival anniversary. They presented a tantalizing selection of gameplay and an engaging nine-minute animated introduction to Marathon’s world. Among the highlights were the initial four “Runners”—Blackbird, Glitch, Locus, and Void—taking the spotlight in their debut showcase.
The confirmed line-up offers a rich blend of characters, each bringing their own distinctive flair. For instance, Void is your go-to for stealthy gameplay, equipped with tools like smoke grenades and an active camouflage suit to evade foes with ease. His preferred method is to strike quickly and retreat just as fast. On the other hand, Blackbird plays it a bit differently, capable of gleaning enemy positions for strategic advantage, taking a more observational approach.
For players who prefer facing adversaries directly, Locus hits the mark with formidable offensive capabilities, albeit at the expense of defense, spotlighting high-octane encounters. Rounding off the quartet is Glitch, whose nimbleness and superior positioning make for an agile and strategic combatant.
Bungie seems to be keeping some surprises under wraps, with two additional characters slated for reveal before Marathon’s official launch. These will likely come to light soon, especially as we anticipate the closed alpha tests. Participants should note, though, that NDAs will keep in-game details from leaking ahead of time.
The hype is certainly building around Bungie’s next big venture. As excited Marathon fans await the game’s full release, all eyes will be on Bungie for more reveals, updates, and maybe a few unexpected twists along the way.
