Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is set to get a thrilling new addition: a “Nightmare Mode” update this April. This remastered version of the offbeat 2012 action-adventure game already features several enhancements, and the upcoming mode hints at a significantly harder gameplay experience.
Since its release in September 2024, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has rapidly hit a sales milestone, moving 200,000 units within its first quarter. The original title, developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, gained a cult following thanks to its unique hack-and-slash action and its charming heroine, Juliet Starling. Now, under the direction of Dragami Games, the remaster introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements and a revamped visual style. But the developers aren’t stopping just yet—fans looking for more depth and difficulty will soon find it with the next update.
In a recent Twitter announcement, Yoshimi Yasuda, one of the game’s designers, teased the addition of “Nightmare Mode,” promising more details to come shortly. Longtime fans have been vocal about their appreciation for Dragami Games’ dedication, especially following December’s highly requested photo mode feature.
However, it’s not all praise for the remaster. Since its debut, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has faced criticism, primarily regarding its optimization issues and allegations of censorship. Moreover, fans lament the absence of most of the iconic soundtrack from the original game, leaving some yearning for those memorable rock anthems from 2012. While the bizarre storytelling and intense action sequences are retained, there’s a hopeful chorus for future updates to enrich the gaming experience further.
Interestingly, Goichi “Suda51” Suda, the original creative force, is not involved with RePOP. He’s busy elsewhere, with plans for a Killer7 revival alongside Shinji Mikami. Despite its 2005 release, Killer7 remains popular today. The dynamic duo, who previously collaborated on Shadows of the Damned, recently oversaw its remaster. Suda is also working on Hotel Barcelona, an upcoming “2.5D slasher film parodic action” game, slated for an early 2025 release.
So, the Lollipop Chainsaw journey continues, with new challenges on the horizon and the promise of even more to come. Fans have plenty to look forward to as this quirky zombie adventure evolves.
